Day 1: Ceglie Messapica
Your slow tour in Puglia begins with meeting your guide, who will wait for you when arriving at the airport or train station. In Slow Drive (slow-paced driving on small roads to enjoy the beautiful landscapes), he’ll transfer you to the hotel in Ceglie Messapica, in the heart of Itria Valley. A small welcome snack is prepared for you.
In the evening, you’ll be taken to dinner in the centre of the village, in a trattoria that prides itself on the savoury dishes of Southern Italy cuisine. Night stay in your 4 star hotel.
Day 2: Polignano a Mare and Alberobello
Go by car to the Adriatic Coast to admire the spectacular Polignano a Mare waterfront and its pure turquoise sea. Lunch in a restaurant specialised in local cuisine.
In the afternoon, take the country road to Alberobello and see its famous (UNESCO World Heritage) trulli.
The region is also known internationally for its production of superior quality extra virgin olive oil and you’ll stop at a local producer for a tasting under the old olive trees. Dinner in the evening and night stay in Ceglie Messapica.
Day 3: Ionian Coast, Primitivo and Porto Cesareo
This day is all about vineyards and sea. We’ll go to the Mediterranean (called the Ionian Sea here), on panoramic roads crossing the fields of olive trees and vines from which the famous red wine Primitivo di Manduria is made. You will have time to breathe in everything and feel the taste of the sun and the sea air in this special Primitivo wine selected for your noon meal.
The afternoon is spent on the turquoise beaches and natural archaeological sites of Porto Cesareo. At the end of the day, have dinner and spend the night in Ceglie Messapica.
Day 4: Typical charming countryside and villages
Take a walk to the core of Southern Italy’s mountains, at the caves of Castellana grotte, a unique natural attraction.
For lunch you’ll go to a Slow Food restaurant in Locorotondo, literally the “round place”, declared one of the most beautiful villages in Italy.
In the afternoon we’ll wander on the streets of Cisternino, renown for its original lifestyle and heritage. For the evening meal, a dinner special. Night stay in Ceglie Messapica.
Day 5: Ostuni and the natural wet zone
Across the read earth of the Itria Valley, passing the pointed roofs of the trulli, we’ll stop at Ostuni, the White City, perched on top of a hill offering a magnificent panoramic view.
In the late morning, start hiking in the Regional Natural Park Dune Costiere on the Adriatic Coast which has dolmens, real rock villages and unique wildlife. We’ll stop to eat at one of the Masserias in the area.
In the late afternoon, departure for Lecce, the Baroque city considered Southern Italy’s Florence. Dinner and night stay in Lecce.
Day 6: Lecce, Adriatic Coast and Otranto
Guided walking tour throughout Lecce to its Baroque architecture masterpieces. Before noon it’s time to go to Otranto on the coastal road. Foodie picnic with local food in a special place on the shore.
In the afternoon, visit the historical centre of Otranto on foot to see the remains of Greek, Byzantine, Turkish and Spanish civilisations. Return to Lecce for dinner and overnight stay.
Day 7: Gallipoli and Leuca
A day spent by the sea, travelling down the Mediterranean coastal road. In the evening we’ll stop to visit the city and port of Gallipoli. Lunch will be a delicious fish-based meal.
In the afternoon we slowly travel down to Leuca, the southernmost place in the Italian heel. There are many exceptional places and sights along this coast that played a very important role in the Mediterranean trade and navigation.
Evening meal on the road back, at an Agriturismo. Night spent in Lecce.
Day 8: Lecce – end of the tour
After breakfast, transfer from Lecce to the airport or railway station for the return journey. It is also possible to extend your holiday, we offer various options depending on the traveller’s interests (available for individual travellers too). Please contact us for a quote.
